Precision Measurement for the Optical Backbone of AI

As AI data centers replace copper with optical interconnects, Gamma Scientific brings decades of laser and photonic power measurement expertise to qualifying every link — from fiber-coupled lasers to GPU-to-GPU optical interfaces.

For more than 65 years, Gamma Scientific has built precision instruments for measuring laser and optical power — expertise now central to how AI data centers scale. As GPU clusters demand data transfer rates copper can no longer sustain, optical interconnects are replacing copper at nearly every link: data center to data center, row to row, rack to rack, server to server, and increasingly GPU to GPU and GPU to memory. Optical interconnects deliver higher throughput over longer distances while consuming less power and generating less heat — but only when every laser, detector, and fiber link is manufactured and validated to spec. Gamma Scientific’s power meters, detectors, and integrating sphere systems are built to do exactly that, from R&D through production test.

Measuring Across the Optical Interconnect Stack

Optical interconnects in AI data centers typically operate between 850nm and 1625nm. Some links use a single wavelength — 850nm, 940nm, 1310nm, and 1550nm are common. Others use wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) to carry multiple wavelengths on one fiber for higher throughput, including bidirectional links: standard WDM (2 wavelengths, typically 1310/1550nm), CWDM (coarse WDM, 20nm steps from 1271–1611nm), and DWDM (dense WDM, 0.8nm steps from 1570–1610nm). Every one of these configurations needs to be measured accurately, at power levels ranging from full fiber-link output down to femtojoule-level signals in chip-to-chip optical interconnects.

The Full Optical Measurement Stack

Gamma Scientific designs, builds, and calibrates every component in-house — amplifiers, detectors, optics, and calibration — so everything works together by design, backed by one consistent standard of accuracy and one point of support.

Measure the Full Power Range

From femtojoule-level chip-to-chip optical signals to full fiber-link output, a single platform spans the full eight decades — no swapping instruments as signal levels change.

Built for Production, Not Just the Bench

Compact, temperature-stabilized instruments designed to integrate directly into production and test lines, not just lab benches

Calibration You Can Trust

NIST-traceable, ISO/IEC 17025-accredited calibration with decades of proven reliability behind every measurement.

Four Components. One Calibrated Measurement.

Every optical interconnect depends on a laser delivering the right amount of power. A typical test setup uses four components to confirm it: the laser or transceiver being tested, an integrating sphere to collect its light, a detector to turn that light into an electrical signal, and the S400 FlexOPM to report calibrated optical power.

Device under test

The laser diode, fiber-coupled laser, or optical transceiver being tested.

Collection Optics

An integrating sphere captures the full output of the laser or fiber.
Model 2500L (150mm)
Model 2575L (50mm)

Sensor

A detector on the sphere converts that light into an electrical current.
Model 221 (Silicon)
Model 280 (InGaAs)

Power Meter & Calibration

The S400 FlexOPM reads the current and reports it as calibrated optical power in watts or joules.
S470, S480 or S490
